Portzamparc team selected as one of four finalists, from among over 90 candidatures from around the world
Bend, OR—December 15, 2008—G2 Strategic (“G2”) announced today an agreement with French architect Christian De Portzamparc (“Portzamparc”) (www.chdeportzamparc.com), to provide consulting services relating to the design of a new 15,000 seat, retractable-roof tennis stadium at Roland-Garros, home of the French Open, as well as Davis Cup and other international tennis competitions.
Portzamparc is best known for designing the renovation of Paris’ Palace of Congress, the headquarters of the French newspaper, Le Monde, Cidade de Musica in Rio de Jinero and the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moëy Hennessy) building in New York City.
G2 will be joined on the team by Ron Turner, one of the world’s most respected sports architects, who is well-known for many of venues, including Staples Center, Verizon Center, Paul Brown Stadium, the David Beckham Academy, Istanbul Super Arena and, with G2, the Moscow Sports & Entertainment Complex.
“We are honored that Portzamparc has selected G2 and Ron to advise them,” said G2 CEO Marshall Glickman. “Successful sporting venues depend on integrating monumental design with efficient function and customer-friendly amenities . With this outsstanding team, I am very confident we can achieve both objectives.”
“We are pleased that Marshall and Ron have agreed to join our team for this monumental project,” said Portzamparc director Vincent Roux. “They bring us a keen understanding of critical design issues, including topics such as electronic ticketing, access control, seating bowl geometry, advertising integration, audio-visual requirements, retailing and hospitality.”
“Marshall and I have collaborated before,” said Turner. “We work together very well, and are humbled to be able to work with a firm of Porzamparc’s global stature, which is well deserved as a result of an incredible portfolio of some of the world’s greatest structures.”
The Portzamparc team was selected by a jury of 15, including leaders from the French Tennis Federation (“FFT”), City of Paris and other architectural, cultural, sports and finance ministries. The new stadium will be built near Roland-Garros, in the 16th district of Paris, known as Porte d’Auteuil. In addition to the new stadium, the design team will be responsible for two additional annex courts, as well as indoor tennis facilities that will support the FFT’s mission to advance educational and social objectives.
The other firms that have been selected as finalists are Paul Andreu (National Theater in Bejing, China; Maritime Museum in Osaka, Japan), Marc Mimram (Beng Bu Bridge in Tianjun, China; renovation of Pailleron in Paris) and Renzo Piano (California Academy of Science in San Francisco, California; Georges Pompidou National Center of Art and Culture in Paris).
The four finalists will now begin a 4-month design competition, where each team will develop their concepts for the project. At the end of this period, one of the four design teams will be selected by the jury, which includes representatives of the FFT and City of Paris, to design the new tennis stadium and related venues.
